thesis projects of Doug Jackson’s studio. Each of these projects focuses on challenging the accepted norm and existing practices of the discipline, through means of social engagement, spatial variability, and public spontaneity. These concepts continue throughout the show as we incorporated themes of participation and investigation by inviting individuals to become actively engaged as they guide their own way through the work. The setup consists of the display board suspended from the existing ceiling structure, models on black bases and extra armatures. These armatures - a magnifying glass, light and iPad using Aurasma - are provided to allow individuals to look closer, search deeper and find additional content. Each student used Aurasma to set “trigger images” in their presentations or models that, when viewed through the iPad, projects extra information onto the triggered surface. Acrylic, Mylar, Servos Publication. ADD: Architecture + Design + Discourse XIII This light is a 9-square grid section of a proposed installation of these cells. Each cell is held in place through a system of vertical structure and horizontal planes guiding the movement. The rotation from each servo is translated with wire through the structure to open the skin. A faceted mylar skin, designed through a geometric exploration of scoring and folding a single surface, clads each cell. Each unit is outfit with a proximity sensor, servo and blue LED. In emptiness, the LEDs glow faintly inside. As someone approaches, the LED begins to glow brighter and the mylar skin opens, revealing the thin skeletal-like acrylic structure. Hostel with Retail, Bar, Viewing Platforms + Public Park Award. 3rd Year Best of Show Nomination Connecting travelers with the culture and youth of Barcelona, the bar is the heart of the urban hostel. Here, it assumes the role of the cardiac muscle, a pulsating muscle transferring energy through the circulatory and structural system into the far extremities of the hostel. From this core public space, the escalator, a direct social vein, extends down to the street, lifting travelers and locals alike directly into an elevated second Placa. Elevated above the height of surrounding buildings, visitors have a view of the entire city. The building fluctuates in two cycles: daily and seasonally. We focused our design on this regular variation, separating self-sufficient program into small groups to maintain density. Typically, when approaching a public seating area, strangers avoid interaction, positioning themselves on opposite sides of a bench. This projects focuses on using excitement and movement as incentive for people to interact. Unoccupied, the bench sits in tension, springs pulling the arms upward, awaiting a visitor. It provides only a single seat - the central seat from which all initial motion is derived. As the first visitor rests his weight upon the seat, the bench comes to life. Each piece is set in motion as both sides fall closer to the ground. Gradually desiccated by the diversion of water into 1914 Los Angeles Aqueduct the ~108 sq. mile Owens Lake became the single greatest source of deleterious PM10 air particulate pollution. After years of litigation, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) was mandated to manage this hazard and has built dust control landscapes costing over 1 billion dollars with annual potable water expenditures equal to the needs of the city of San Francisco. Because the project must abide by the State’s Public Trust Doctrine the utility has found it difficult to find water efficient ways to control dust, while still providing public values. The rapid landscape prototyping machine addresses this complex and timely design challenge. Hybridizing engineering physical modeling techniques, robotic technology, digital projection, and 3D scanning the machine creates a new multi-sensory design platform to rigorously address the design issues present on the alkali lake. The machine creates a common ground where designers, engineers, and the public can fluidly engage in the multiple concerns inherent to the infrastructure. The designs developed with this machine are presented within an interactive multi-media landscape “player” that employs 21st century interactive pictorial representations to immerse users in the on-going search for resource efficient public values for the lake. The project identifies prismatic structures as open, multi-faceted surfaces which are derived through the extrusion of selected faces of a base polyhedron. By identifying prismatic structures which possess one or more degrees of freedom, we are then able to reorient, reconfigure, array and actuate these mechanisms to produce robotically useful (and perhaps even beautiful) movement. ‘Soft’ materials such as cardstock and thin chipboard are utilized to construct prototypes, relating the work to folded tectonics and the notion of informal robotics, whereby rigid, hard materials are replaced by the relatively pliant. Lastly, PAL is conceived of as an interactive component of a complex, whereby a number of agents are able to demonstrate a variety of behaviors within an automated system.
